Comment: I'm taking classes at the local University in photography and my last project was to take 2 pictures to see how creative we can be. I took a few still life photos and an amazing sunset landscape shot. Just getting this program a few days prior to my project due date, I decided to see what these filters can do for me. INCREDIBLE!!! So far it has been easy to make adjustments within the program. I shot a still-life that was nothing to really write home about and made it part of my Portfolio. With all the possibilities, it took me a while to get the look I was searching for. I opened the photo in the program and started messing around with the sliders and stumbled across a filter I thought I'd never use. There it was! My instructor and classmates were so impressed, I knew I just hit a homerun.
About a month later, the v2 version came out and had to spend an extra $30 to upgrade. Small price to pay to find that everlasting photo that just might move the world someday. Well, it moved the world that day and I'm still making an impact showing off what some people thought I spent hours in photoshop.
I recommend this product, it is stable on my iMAC and is very fast.

Summary: Like having an extra thousand filters in your camera bag
Comment: As a photogrpaher/book author - all of whose books are sold here on Amazon - I'm always looking for ways to control light no matter what time of day, and to make my images look better or more interesting. DFX is like a secret weapon. I used to travel with a couple of dozen expensive glass filters. I've dropped pieces of glass more costly than this program and been without them for the rest of a road trip.
No more. This program is better than having an extra thousand filters in your camera bag. That's because you can save your original image and still experiment with color correction or modification effects on countless copies.
Perhaps most important, DFX is intuitive. Unlike some other photo manipulation programs that require 600 page manuals and a computer science degree to learn, this program is very easy to use. Slider menus show you what your options are. Windows show you your unaltered image and what your modifications do to it. You can easily layer your modifications and almost every "filter" comes in graduated increments. Some offer as many as 10 scales of change.
The old axiom "Less is more" applies here because you can truly make your images look wierd. But even that has its applications. In the meantime the program can help you organize your next shoot in your mind, figuring in advance what DFX effects you'll when your back at the computer.

Summary: Filters, Filters and more Filters!
Comment: For the cost of a handful of physical glass filters, Tiffen Dfx claims to offer hundreds to thousands of digital filter simulations.
Having just installed the stand-alone version today, I've only been able to try a few dozen, but am already sold on the package. Some of the "canned" Dfx effects can be achieved in PhotoShop, but having them fully preset is a fantastic time saver and between the wide range of presets and the highly customizable "parameters" control panel, almost any conceivable filter effect can be achieved quickly and easily. Installation on an iMac was quick and easy and the user interface is fairly intuitive and reasonably easy to learn, but does require that one studies the user guide. Camera Raw image files and ".jpg's" are processed quickly and multiple filter layering is a snap.
The possibilities inherent in this program are literally limitless. Some of the effects really cannot be equated with physical filters and can achieve results that would be impossible to accomplish with a piece of glass in front of your lens. On the other hand, some filters, like the "polarizer" are only partial simulations and don't really do what a "real" polarizer could.
Tiffen makes this program available for free trial for 15 days. That's more than enough time to find out if it's right for you. The 538 page Tiffen User Guide is also downloadable and explains the parameters available for each filter in easy to understand language.
UPDATE:
After using Dfx fo (4) days I'm still impressed, but have found that the program is less stable than I'd like. If options are selected too fast, the program can "hang" and become unresponsive. There is no indication that one is moving too fast,and the only way I've found to get things working again is to quit and restart the program. I'd recommend that you save work at regular intervals having to avoid having to re-do a lot of steps if the program "hangs".
One of the things I don't like is the way the various control windows and menus tend to resize and re-position themselves when all you want to do is move them a small amount. They have a mind of their own and will snap to a new position even if all you want to do is move them a small amount. This can be a minor irritant and something I find to be a minor pain.
Another minor oversight is the lack of scroll bars on image windows in which a magnified section of an image is presented. You must switch to a "grabber" tool to simply move the image within the window which requires a lot of extra mouse movement and extra clicks that scroll bars would eliminate. Hopefully, V 1.1 will correct some of these oversights.
Pros: Great control of filter perameters. Easy and effective mask generation. Easy to set and move between multiple layers.
Con: Program "hangs" too often. User interface is not very "Mac like" in the Macintosh OS-X version. Auto positioning of windows does things you may not want. User interface needs improvement. Needs Scroll bars or a thumbnail window with a position box (like Apple Aperture) please!
Otherwise, still recommended!
